Md.: Ask legislative leadership to let the people vote on marijuana legalization!
Please call Senate President Mike Miller and House Speaker Mike Busch and ask for their support for moving Senate Bill 1039 or House Bill 1264 forward this year. Please be brief and respectful (how we say it is as important as what we say), and be prepared to leave a message with staff. Here are some brief talking points:
- I am calling to request that [Speaker Busch/Senate President Miller] work to ensure the bills to allow voters decide marijuana legalization and regulation — House Bill 1264 / Senate Bill 1039 — receive a vote.
- Sixty-four percent (64%) of likely Maryland voters support taxing and regulating marijuana, and we want to make our voices heard on Election Day!
- Prohibition is a failure; cannabis is already being used by people across the state. The question isn’t whether people should use cannabis, it’s whether or not those who do should have to obtain it from gangs and cartels or be able to shop safely in lawful, taxed, regulated businesses.
- Let’s not wait any longer; we have five years of data from Colorado and Washington showing this reform is successful.
If you have a personal story about how prohibition has impacted you, you can share that as well.
After you call, please let us know how it went!

Please call your state Senator who sits on the Judicial Proceedings Committee and ask them to vote YES on SB 602. Please be brief and respectful (how we say it is as important as what we say), and be prepared to leave a message with staff. Here are some brief talking points:
- Please vote YES on SB 602 before the crossover deadline so that this bill can be considered in the House.
- This bill isn’t really about gun rights — it’s about ensuring that medical cannabis patients have the same rights under state law as all other Marylanders.
- We should be encouraging patients to participate in the medical cannabis program, which the General Assembly and an overwhelming majority of Marylanders support. Medical cannabis is a safer alternative to the opioids that many patients are otherwise prescribed.
After you call, please let us know how it went!

Ask your lawmakers to defend state medical marijuana programs
Since December 2014, what is now called the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer amendment has prohibited the Justice Department from spending funds to interfere with the implementation of state medical marijuana laws. This amendment must be renewed each fiscal year in order to remain in effect and has been included in a series of spending bills approved from 2016 and this year, with the most recent extension expiring on March 23, 2018.
With Attorney General Sessions threatening to ramp up enforcement of federal marijuana prohibition, this amendment is the only thing preventing medical marijuana patients and providers who are in compliance with state law from being targeted.
Please tell your lawmakers to urge the Appropriations Committee to respect state law and include medical marijuana protections in the FY2018 spending bill. You can contact them directly using the email form below, or you can call the Appropriations Committee office at (202) 225-2771 to let them know voters want these protections to be a priority.

Ask your lawmakers to support sensible marijuana policies!
The House Judiciary Committee will be considering a bill that would decriminalize less than one ounce of marijuana.
You see, today Alabamans caught with small amounts of marijuana can be sent to jail for up to one year. These bills, HB 272 and SB 251, would change the penalty for possessing less than one ounce of marijuana to a violation instead of a misdemeanor. That means the penalty would be paying a fine of up to $250 instead of facing jail time.
Please ask your representatives and senators to support HB 272 and SB 251!

Vermont: Follow up with your representatives!
On January 4, 2018, 81 representatives voted to pass H. 511 — a bill to legalize possession and limited cultivation of marijuana for adults 21 and older. They deserve our thanks. Unfortunately, 63 representatives voted against the bill. The full roll call vote is here.
Please send a message to your representatives to thank them or express disappointment, depending on their vote. The correct message (based on their vote) will automatically load after you type in your address. Regardless of whether they voted yes on H. 511, please encourage them to support the next step: regulating and taxing marijuana!

Ask your lawmakers to reduce the penalties for marijuana possession!
The Iowa Legislature is back in session, and there is renewed hope for common-sense marijuana policy reform. Last week, a Senate subcommittee recommended passage of SF 432, a bill that would reduce the penalties for marijuana possession. The bill would change the penalty for first offense possession of marijuana under five grams from a serious misdemeanor to a simple misdemeanor.
Ask your lawmakers to reduce the penalties for marijuana possession!

Ask your lawmakers to support sensible marijuana policies!
Rep. Mark Cardenas has introduced HB 2014, which would reduce the penalty for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana to $100. Please urge your state legislators to support HB 2014!
Imprisoning individuals for possessing small amounts of a substance that is safer than alcohol wastes valuable resources and can lead to a lifetime of harsh consequences, including denial of student financial aid, housing, employment, and professional licenses.

W.Va.: It’s time to fix the medical cannabis law!
West Virginia’s 2018 legislative session is underway, and several bills have already been introduced to make the medical cannabis program more workable and accessible for patients.
The two most important bills that have been introduced so far are HB 4147 and HB 4149. HB 4147 would require the state to begin issuing ID cards to qualified patients and caregivers in July of this year instead of waiting until July 2019. HB 4149 would allow patients to purchase cannabis flowers from dispensaries, rather than limiting patients to more expensive extracts.
Please email your state legislators today and tell them patients can’t afford to wait another year and a half, and that they need access to whole plant cannabis!
-
Ask your lawmakers to stand with seriously ill Mississippians!
The legislature is back in session with several medical marijuana bills to consider. Mississippi patients deserve the same access to these treatment options as patients living in the 29 states that have already enacted medical marijuana laws.

Tell state lawmakers it’s time to reform marijuana laws!
The Kentucky Legislature began its 2018 session last week, and marijuana policy reforms are already among the top issues being discussed in Frankfort. A medical cannabis bill, HB 166, has already been introduced in the House, and a similar bill is expected to be introduced soon in the Senate. But that’s not all. Sen. Dan Seum, chairman of the Republican Senate Caucus, held a press conference yesterday to announce that he is introducing a bill, SB 80, that would legalize, regulate, and tax cannabis for adults 21 and older. Please send your representatives and senators a message and urge them to support reforming marijuana laws in 2018!
-
Ask your lawmakers to support taxing and regulating marijuana for adults.
New Jersey lawmakers are just beginning their 2018 session, but marijuana legalization is already on their minds! Sen. Nicholas Scutari and Asm. Reed Gusciora, who have been leaders on this issue, have reintroduced SB 830 / AB 1348, which would tax and regulate marijuana for adults 21 and over. Please contact your lawmakers and ask them to support this sensible policy that would help keep people out of the criminal justice system, improve public safety, and raise millions in tax revenue.
-
Ask your lawmaker to introduce a medical marijuana bill
Idaho lawmakers began their 2018 legislative session last week, but so far there are no marijuana policy reform bills on the agenda. Idaho is one of only two states in the entire U.S. that does not even have a limited low-THC medical cannabis law. Seriously ill Idahoans deserve better. Please ask your representatives to show compassion and introduce a medical marijuana bill in 2018.
-
Ask your lawmaker to support the Kansas Safe Access Act
Kansas lawmakers began their 2018 legislative session last week with several marijuana bills before them, including SB 187 / HB 2348, the Kansas Safe Access Act. This bill would create an effective medical marijuana program in Kansas. Please ask your representatives to show compassion and allow patients access to treatments that can help alleviate the suffering associated with serious conditions like cancer, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy.

Tell Sen. Feinstein to protect Californians from Jeff Sessions’ anti-marijuana crusade!
Sen. Dianne Feinstein has been a consistent obstacle to protecting states’ medical marijuana and legalization laws from federal interference. With Attorney General Jeff Sessions revoking the Cole Memo that protected state-legal activities from federal law enforcement, voters need her to start standing up for them.
Please call Sen. Feinstein’s office today at (310) 914-7300 (Southern California) or (415) 393-0707 (Northern California). Your call will be answered by a staff member or it will go to voicemail.

Please be polite, concise, and respectful (most staff members are probably on our side anyway), and always remember, we are trying to persuade decision makers, not alienate them. Thanks for taking the time to take action!

Tell Congress to stop Jeff Sessions
It's time for Congress to pass legislation that establishes marijuana policy as a states' rights issue. If a state decides to legalize, regulate, and tax marijuana, there should be no interference from the federal government.
In 2012, voters began approving marijuana legalization ballot initiatives in a number of states. Since then, the policy of the federal government (known as the "Cole Memo") had been to take a hands-off approach, with the Department of Justice encouraging prosecutors to not enforce federal prohibition laws if individuals or businesses were complying with state law.
On January 4, 2018, that all changed. Attorney General Sessions rescinded the Department of Justice's hands-off policy, paving the way for prosecution of legal marijuana businesses. These businesses employ thousands of Americans and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue.
Please contact your Senators and Representative today and tell them to pass legislation that allows states to make their own decisions on marijuana policy.

Those protections are set to expire TOMORROW unless Congress includes them in the budget for next year.

Please send a message to your representatives to thank them or express disappointment, depending on their vote. The correct message (based on their vote) will automatically load after you type in your address. -

Ask Congress to Protect State Marijuana Laws
Throughout his presidential campaign, Donald Trump expressed support for letting states determine their own marijuana policies. However, he raised concerns when he selected Jeff Sessions, a longtime supporter of marijuana prohibition and opponent of state-level reform, to serve as attorney general.
The Trump administration is in the process of reviewing the Justice Department’s existing enforcement policy, and it is still unclear whether they intend to respect or interfere with state laws regulating marijuana for medical and adult use.
Use the form below to email your members of Congress and ask them to protect state marijuana laws.

Ask your members of Congress to end federal marijuana prohibition
The 2016 election will go down as one of the most important elections for marijuana policy reform. Voters in California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada approved ballot measures to regulate marijuana production and sales to adults 21 and older. These states join Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington by adopting these reform measures, and many others are sure to follow.
Unfortunately, the federal government continues to classify marijuana as a Schedule I narcotic and clings to an ineffective and outdated blanket prohibition. It is long past time for that to change.
Please email your members of Congress and urge them to end the federal marijuana prohibition. Removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act will allow states to adopt policies that work best for their populations.
Please email your members, and then be sure to share this page with your friends and family across the country so they can reach out to their members as well.

My nine-year-old son Connor has lived with severe epilepsy since he was a baby. Despite trying 17 medicines, which have caused devastating side effects, he still suffers from constant seizures. Three years ago a seizure lasting 36 hours left the doctors with no choice but to place him in a medically induced coma. When we woke up he was left without the ability to speak, crawl, and sit up. That was the last I heard my son call me mama. I ask, what kind of life is this for my family and my son?
Medical marijuana has proven successful for others with intractable seizures that aren’t responding to medications. I have seen family and friends move out of state to get their children the medicine because Louisiana does not offer it. Please give Connor a chance at a better life. Please urge your legislators to vote “yes” on SB 271.-Katie Corkern, Amite, Louisiana
